Thanks for an excellent chordage of one of my faveorite songs of all time!
Here's my take on the intro riff( and everywhere else riff!) 
the rest of sterfa02's tab is spot on
this should be capoed at the 3rd fret for the original sound

this is just a little bit better with the slide up the 7 on the D string
after this is played go straight to the Am chord then F# and C

derek webb recnetly came out with a dvd on which he plays this song. its pretty plain to see that he is doing no sliding in that song and that he just plays that part on the b and g strings.

Yogger - 2007-03-24

I saw Derek play this song live on his electric guitar. He does slide. I've also seen him live acoustic and he doesn't slide. He does both.
